The skin contains sebaceous glands at the base of the hair follicles. These sebaceous glands are responsible for producing the body’s natural oil (sebum), which protects and moisturizes our skin and hair. However when this sebum mixes with dead skin cells and ends up trapped in the hair follicles bacteria forms and results in Acne.

Acne can present as noninflammatory congestion such as comedones (blackheads) and follicular papules, however in the more severe cases it usually means inflammatory pustules and blemishes also. The sebaceous glands are found in the most numbers around the face, chest, shoulders and back and as such, these are the areas most commonly affected by acne.

Acne can be uncomfortable for the sufferer, both physically and also emotionally. It can cause scarring and affects self esteem. The good news is that with the right treatment and care acne can be managed. The first step is a little research…
